“Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.”
MATTHEW 7:6 (NIV)
The British actor, Sir Anthony Hopkins, recently shared a profoundly deep and moving message online that resonated with my deeply buried emotions. Yes, it touched me, because it answers several questions, I’ve been carrying within myself for some time, questions to which I struggled to find answers. The topic concerns human relationships, particularly those with people closest to our hearts.
Here’s the first paragraph of this rich, let’s call it, “letter to the inhabitants of Earth,” which could be dissected into so many parts that it would suffice for the script of dozens of broadcasts: "Let go of people who are not ready to love you. This is one of the most difficult tasks life will place before you, but it is also one of the most important. Stop wasting your energy on conversations with those who don’t want to change and stop devoting your time to people who are not interested in your presence."
Indeed, too often we try to gain or regain the acceptance of others, even at the cost of our physical and emotional well-being, and that is a mistake. The truth may be that not everyone is meant for you, and you are not meant for everyone. And what does the Bible say about such matters? In the seventh chapter of the Gospel of Matthew, Scripture says: "Do not give dogs what is holy; do not throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them underfoot, and turn and tear you to pieces." These words remind us that the value of your life and energy should not be wasted on people who are not ready or able to appreciate it.
When you begin to strive for a life full of joy, engagement, and passion, not everyone will want to follow you on that path. And that’s okay. You don’t need to change who you are, but you must be ready to let go of those who are not prepared to accompany you on this journey. The Bible, in the fifteenth chapter of the First Letter to the Corinthians, teaches: "Do not be deceived: 'Bad company ruins good morals,'" which emphasizes how important it is to surround yourself with people who support your values and aspirations.
The most precious things you have are your time and energy, and these are irreplaceable. Guard them as your most valuable treasure, allowing your life to be a safe haven where only those who are fully compatible with you have a place. Your task is to care for yourself, for your heart, and for your soul; then love, respect, and happiness will naturally find their way into your life. By deciding that you deserve true friendship and love, you will open the door to relationships that bring you true fulfillment.
