Meeting by the River - Episode 28
The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?” They said, “Rabbi” which means “Teacher”, “where are you staying?” “Come,”he replied, “and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.
John 1, 35-39 (NIV)
Today's Gospel takes us to a moment that seems very simple, but, is groundbreaking. Just imagine, two travelers break away from a third and head towards a fourth. Is that all there is to it? Certainly not! This is a pivotal encounter of John the Baptist's disciples with Jesus, an event that has made its mark in world history. John points to Jesus, saying, "Behold, the Lamb of God." I am convinced that even then, without Instagram and Twitter, these words spread faster than a recipe for the perfect yeast cake in a small community!
