BEWARE, YOUR ENEMY LOVES YOU

UNDAILY Episode 162


“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

The theme of our reflection is a difficult idea to accept, which I have given the provocative title: "Beware, Your Enemy Loves You." This issue, particularly close to my current life experiences, has inspired me to reflect more deeply. Let's ask ourselves, "Can our enemy really love us?" I sincerely doubt it, unless we're talking about a specific kind of love expressed through gratitude for the opportunity to satisfy their evil instincts and plant a bad spirit in you. To avoid the pitfalls of toxic love and forgiveness, Jesus calls us to examine the Word of God, which will help us discern all the ways to apply His teaching on forgiveness in a healthy and safe manner.
